Lynn Shannon Board Perspectives 2026

A Profession Behind Progress

From breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and medical advances to cleaner energy, the world is changing at an extraordinary pace. Every day, organizations launch new products, transform the way they work, and tackle increasingly complex challenges.

Most people see the outcomes: new products, AI-enabled solutions, infrastructure improvements, healthcare innovations, and community initiatives. But what they don't always see are the project professionals who bring these projects to completion. Behind nearly every change is a project, and behind every successful project are people who bring the ideas, stakeholders, and teams together to turn these visions into reality. Across industries and around the world, project professionals help transform ideas into outcomes that improve organizations, communities, and lives.

As we celebrate International Project Management Day on 5 November, we have a great opportunity to shine a light on a profession that quietly enables progress across every sector and region of the world.

The role of the project professional has never been more relevant. Today’s project professionals do far more than manage schedules, budgets, and deliverables. They help organizations navigate uncertainty, align diverse perspectives, adapt to changing conditions, and create outcomes that deliver real value. These professionals often serve as the bridge between an organization’s strategy and its execution, helping transform ambition into real action.

At a time when the pace of change continues to accelerate, the world needs project professionals now more than ever. Organizations are investing in digital transformation, artificial intelligence, sustainability initiatives, and workforce evolution. Yet none of these ambitions become reality on their own. Progress happens through projects, and projects succeed because dedicated project professionals guide them from concept to outcome.

Project managers improve the world we live in. This is also true within our PMI global community. Our volunteers, chapter leaders, certification holders, and members around the world contribute every day to advancing the profession and helping others succeed. Their dedication, passion, and commitment strengthen our community and extend the profession’s impact far beyond any one single project.

As we celebrate on 5 November, remember that International Project Management Day is ultimately a celebration of people. It is an opportunity to recognize those whose leadership, collaboration, and perseverance help drive positive changes in organizations and communities across the globe.

I encourage you all to take a moment on this day to recognize another project professional: a volunteer, a colleague, or a mentor whose efforts deserve to be celebrated. Their work may not always be visible to others, but their results are all around us.

On behalf of the PMI Board of Directors, thank you for the impact you have on your projects and for your contributions to our profession.

With appreciation,
