Driving change through social impact
Using project management for social change
At PMI, social impact means using our project management skills to make a difference. By partnering with not for profits and driving targeted initiatives, we aim to create sustainable, long-lasting improvements in communities across the globe. Our efforts align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), focusing on areas like education, health, sustainability, and economic stability. Through strategic volunteerism and Project Management expertise, we empower communities and transform lives.
Engage, volunteer, and transform lives
We believe in the power of project management to drive positive change. There are multiple ways you can contribute to our social impact initiatives, whether through global programs or local efforts. By volunteering your skills and time, you can make a meaningful difference in communities worldwide. Here are some of the key ways you can get involved.
Project Managers Without Borders
Project Managers Without Borders (PMWB) connects skilled project managers with not for profit organizations to drive impactful change worldwide. By providing essential project management expertise, PMWB helps not for profit efficiently execute crucial initiatives, maximize their impact, and enhance their operations. Join us in supporting sustainable development and creating lasting positive effects in communities worldwide.
Osiris Gratacós, driven by personal tragedy, founded Fundación Educación Vial to improve road safety in Panama City. In 2020, María Laura González, PMP, joined her cause through PMI Hours for Impact, pledging 250 hours. As a project manager and civil engineer, González helped create a strategic business plan, improving the foundation's efficiency and sustainability. “Time is the most valuable asset a person can give, and what better way to expend it than by generating value for organizations that improve the world?” says González. This partnership not only advanced SDGs, but it also strengthened the foundation's mission to save lives.
PMI Educational Foundation
For over 30 years, the PMI Educational Foundation (PMIEF) has equipped youth with essential project management skills to help them thrive. By engaging in pro bono work and partnering with youth-serving non-profit organizations, PMIEF volunteers empower the next generation to lead successful and impactful lives. Join us in fostering educational growth and creating brighter futures for young people around the world.
Amidst the destruction of their facilities, Special Olympics Ukraine demonstrated resilience by continuing to empower individuals with intellectual disabilities. With crucial funding and support from the PMI Educational Foundation (PMIEF), they rebuilt their programs and supported athletes, coaches, and volunteers. This effort culminated in the Special Olympics World Games 2023 in Berlin, where Team Ukraine won 21 medals, showcasing their strength and the impact of PMIEF's partnership.
Local initiatives with PMI chapters and organizations
PMI chapters and the organizations you work for offer various opportunities to pledge your project management skills toward social good. Engaging with local initiatives allows you to make a direct impact within your community and use your expertise to support critical projects.
Syreeta Bond, DBA, PMP, is transforming the fashion industry with her Lipstick Killers Collection (LKC), a 100% carbon-neutral clothing line. As a project manager at Apple and a member of the PMI Los Angeles Chapter, Bond pledged 200 hours through PMI Hours for Impact, supporting SDGs 10, 11, and 13. “Our aim is to set the standard for fashion companies worldwide and to encourage all fashion companies to reverse their impact on the environment as much as possible,” she says. Bond’s project management skills helped LKC partner with Pale Blue Dot and EcoCart to eliminate its carbon footprint. “I love volunteering for PMI because it’s not only good for the soul, it’s good for the world,” she says. Her commitment to sustainability and social responsibility demonstrates the power of project management in driving meaningful change.
