After You Apply
Screening and Verification
We review your required documents to verify the information in your application and confirm that everything is complete.
Review and Scoring
After screening and verification are completed, your application moves to the next stage for evaluation.
PMI uses a standardized, points-based rubric to ensure fairness, consistency, and transparency in the scholarship review process. Rubrics help reviewers stay aligned, reduce the influence of personal bias, and apply the same expectations to all applicants.
Additionally, PMI uses structured anonymization inside Submittable to remove personally identifiable information (PII), institutional or organizational prestige cues, geographic markers, and other elements that could influence reviewer judgment.
Your submission is reviewed holistically, but two components carry the most weight:
- Essays
- Letters of Recommendation
Criteria used by reviewers include:
- Personal Story Impact & Connection to Project Management
- Critical Thinking Skills
- Grammar, Mechanics & Clarity
How to strengthen your essays:
- Tell a specific, compelling story.Reviewers reward depth, clarity, and practical application to demonstrate why your experiences led you toward project management.
- Connect your experiences directly to project management.Make the link explicit and thoughtful.
- Demonstrate critical thinking.Explain not just what happened, but what you learned and how it shapes your future actions.
- Write clearly.Reviewers score down for essays that are vague, confusing, overly general, or poorly edited.
All decisions by the review committee are final and any attempts by applicants to lobby or persuade the committee or its individual reviewers during this process will result in immediate disqualification from applying for scholarships from PMI.
Tip: If you use AI tools, PMI requires you to cite, disclose, and document them appropriately. We recommend you explain in as much detail as possible how you used AI in the disclosure on the application form, and check your school’s policies for best practices.
Reviewers assess how strongly recommenders support your academic potential, commitment, and character.
High scoring letters:
- Provide detailed, concrete examples of your achievements
- Demonstrate genuine knowledge of your work
- Clearly endorse your candidacy
Common issues that lower scores:
- Generic letters, letters written by AI/ChatGPT/LLM without disclosures
- Letters that don't mention your academic or project management potential
- Letters that contradict or fail to support your essays
How to strengthen this section:
- Request letters early and be specific about what you want and need in the letter.Use our template to get started.
- Give recommenders your resume and essay drafts so they can write specifically.
- Choose recommenders who know you well.
After all reviews are completed, we apply a z-score normalization to further support equity and fairness across the full review pool.
Once scoring is finalized, we match the highest scoring applicants to the available scholarship funds.
You can receive only one scholarship per academic year.
The time it takes to complete the review process may vary each year depending on the volume of applications we receive.
You will receive updates and final decision notifications through Submittable. You can anticipate a final response by 12 weeks after the application deadline or sooner.
Please remember that your financial planning is your own responsibility.
If you need to meet a tuition deadline, contact your financial aid office promptly. We cannot accelerate scholarship processing or accommodate urgent requests related to enrollment status. If you are not enrolled when the scholarship is offered, you will not receive a scholarship. It is essential that you actively seek out other funding sources to secure your enrollment.
If selected, you will be asked to submit:
- Confirmation of receipt and financial aid contact information
- Proof of enrollment
- Press release or permission documents
All additional information must be submitted within one (1) week of receiving the offer or the scholarship will be offered to an alternate candidate.
Scholarship funds are sent directly to your institution.
After our team receives confirmation from you to accept the award, our procurement team will reach out directly to your school to facilitate the payment. We encourage you to contact your school early so they are ready to receive the required documentation.
If your school does not respond or complete the necessary steps to set up payment within 30 days, we will need to offer the scholarship to an alternate candidate.
Disclaimer: We cannot guarantee that your scholarship will be awarded within the timeframe needed to meet payment deadlines for the fall semester. As noted above, your financial planning is your responsibility, and we cannot expedite processes on your behalf. Customer Care cannot resolve personal financial issues or escalate timelines for you.
We understand that waiting for scholarship funds can be stressful, and we appreciate your patience as payments are processed. If you anticipate challenges meeting payment deadlines, we recommend contacting your school's financial aid office early or exploring short-term payment plans they may offer.
Beginning this year, we will highlight selected scholarship essays on projectmanagement.com, with your permission.
Students have told us they want real stories and real examples. We are excited to showcase them and share the many paths into this profession.
