If you're preparing for the Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification, or planning PMP training for your team, one of the most important decisions you'll make is how you train.

Should you choose self-paced, on-demand learning? Or is instructor-led training the better path?

PMP candidates typically decide between self-paced learning, non-authorized training providers, or PMI Authorized Training Partners (ATPs). Not all PMP training approaches offer the same level of structure, support, or alignment to PMI standards, and the path you take can directly influence your certification success.

For a certification as rigorous and career-defining as the PMP, the answer often comes down to readiness. PMP preparation is more than reviewing content. It requires applying concepts to complex scenarios, building exam readiness, and ensuring your training meets PMI certification requirements.

That’s why many professionals and organizations choose instructor-led training through a PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP).

With a new PMP exam launching in July and updates to PMP training requirements coming later this year, choosing the right training provider matters more than ever. We break down what to know—and what it means for your training choice—below.

Why training method matters

Passing the PMP is not a casual undertaking. The exam tests your ability to apply project management knowledge across complex, real-world scenarios, not just recall definitions.

That’s why many candidates find instructor-led training more effective than self-paced, on-demand learning alone.

On-demand training offers flexibility and can be a strong option for some learners. But for many PMP candidates, especially those balancing work and exam preparation, instructor-led training provides the added structure and live support needed to stay on track and build confidence.

Instructor-led training from a PMI Authorized Training Partner gives learners expert guidance, live interaction, and built-in accountability. You can ask questions, work through difficult concepts in real time, and learn how frameworks apply in practice.

When delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner, instructor led training also ensures alignment with PMI standards and exam content, helping candidates focus on what matters most and approach the exam with confidence.

For organizations, this approach provides structured learner support, opportunities to tailor delivery, and more predictable certification readiness.

What is a PMI Authorized Training Partner?

A PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP) is an organization that has been vetted and approved by PMI to deliver official, instructor-led PMP training.

ATPs aren’t just training providers that offer PMP courses. They meet PMI standards for instructor qualification, course content, and learner experience—giving learners and organizations assurance that training aligns with PMI standards and certification requirements.

When you train with an ATP, you know your learning meets PMI expectations, supports certification eligibility requirements, and is designed to help you succeed on exam day and beyond.

Why ATP training

1. Meets PMP training requirements

PMP candidates must complete 35 hours of project management training aligned to the exam content outline. ATP courses are designed to satisfy this requirement—so the hours you invest count toward your application, and the content stays aligned to what PMI tests.

For organizations, this reduces risk and rework: you can invest in team training with confidence that employees will meet the education requirement to sit for the exam.

2. PMI-developed course content

ATP instructors deliver PMI-developed course content as the core of their training, so what you learn maps directly to the Exam Content Outline and reflects current project management practice.

Independent training providers may offer PMP preparation courses, but they can’t offer PMI-developed content. That distinction matters when preparing for one of the most rigorous certifications in the profession.

3. PMP-certified instructors

ATP instructors who teach PMP courses hold the PMP certification themselves, so they bring firsthand context on the exam and how the concepts show up in real scenarios. They also take a PMI trainer course to ensure consistent delivery and alignment with PMI course standards.

4. Global, multilingual training

The PMI network of Authorized Training Partners spans the globe, offering PMP training across multiple languages and formats (in-person, virtual, and hybrid). The instructor-led PMP course is available from ATPs in 10 languages.

5. Industry-tailored learning

Many ATPs bring deep experience in specific industries, which can make examples, discussions, and applications more relevant for learners (and support tailored, bespoke programs for organizations training teams).

PMP changes in 2026

2026 is a pivotal year for the PMP. With a new exam launching in July and additional updates to PMP training requirements later in the year, it’s worth planning your prep path now, especially if you’re targeting a certification timeline in the next 6–12 months.

Candidates and organizations should be aware of two shifts:

  • PMP exam updates (9 July 2026): A new PMP exam goes live on 9 July 2026. To stay aligned, train on content built for the updated exam. PMI Authorized Training Partners began delivering the updated instructor-led course (using PMI-developed content) on 14 April 2026.
  • Live training eligibility update (late Q4 2026): Starting in late Q4 2026, PMI plans to require that live instructor-led PMP® training—whether virtual or in person—be delivered through approved provider pathways to be eligible to meet PMP application requirements. If you’re planning instructor-led training in the next 12 months, choosing your provider early can help you stay ahead of the update. (Training completed before the update will remain eligible under today’s requirements)

Starting late Q4 2026, if you earn PMP training hours through a live class, they will be eligible only if the course is delivered by a:

  • PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP)
  • PMI Registered Education Provider (REP) — China-specific
  • Eligible accredited university, including PMI GAC-accredited programs

There is no change to eligibility for on-demand, self-paced training.

That’s where ATP training stands out: it’s built on PMI-developed content, delivered by PMP-certified instructors, and designed to meet PMI training standards—so you’re less likely to spend time (or budget) on outdated materials, retraining, or live classes that don’t support your PMP application when you’re ready to apply.
