Path to Certification

Before you apply, make sure you meet one of the following sets of PMI-SP certification requirements:

Set A requirements

  • Secondary degree
  • 40 months of project scheduling experience within the last 5 years
  • 40 hours of project scheduling education

Set B requirements

  • Four-year degree
  • 24 months of project scheduling experience within the last 5 years
  • 30 hours of project scheduling education

Set C requirements

  • Bachelor’s or post-graduate degree from a GAC accredited program (bachelor’s or master’s degree or global equivalent)
  • At least 12 months spent in the specialized area of professional project scheduling within the last five consecutive years
  • 30 contact hours of formal education in the specialized area of project scheduling*

*PMI accepts hours spent in training for Microsoft® Project and for other scheduling tools.

  • Copy of degree
  • Verification of experience signed by supervisor
  • Certification or proof of project management experience

Schedule your PMI-SP exam

  • You can take your exam at a Pearson Vue Testing Center.
  • You may attempt the exam up to three times in one year if you don't pass.

Maintaining your certification

Earning your PMI-SP certification is a big step — maintaining it shouldn’t have to be. Continuing education is core to PMI certification. PMI-SP holders need to earn 30 professional development units (PDUs) in each 3-year cycle to maintain certification. Each PDU represents one hour spent:
