Eligibility

The award will be given to the best journal paper submitted on the application of engineering and construction technology within the last two calendar years.

Ineligible Submissions
  • Current PMI team members
  • Current members of PMI’s Academic Advisory Team (AAT)
  • Anyone who has received this award within the last 10 years
  • Individuals who have failed to comply with PMI policies and procedures, including PMI's Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct

Participation & Conflict of Interest

  • Current members of PMI’s Board of Directors may not participate in nomination or evaluation. 
Criteria, Rules & Guidelines

Criteria

The Donald S. Barrie Award candidates to demonstrate the following criteria:

  • Successfully applied research outcomes in practice and/or contributed to knowledge through extraction of learning from practice.
  • Published journal papers subjected to peer-review in the individual’s area of expertise, and contributing to project management. Published within the last two years.
  • Advances knowledge in the field of design, procurement, and/or construction by providing a useful practical contribution to the engineering and construction industry.
  • Focuses on originality and innovation.
  • Presents a pragmatic approach to current engineering and construction issues focused on one or more of the following areas:
    • Engineering and construction means and methods
    • Project organizations and delivery systems
    • Engineering and construction performance
    • Cost, schedule, and progress controls
  • Focuses on addressing issues and challenges based on one of the following sub-categories:
    • Megaprojects/ Gigaprojects
    • Technology and Digitalization
    • Procurement/Delivery Methods

Awards Rules & Conditions

  • Nominations that are submitted incomplete, incorrectly formatted, late, or in a language other than English will not be considered.
  • PMI will not reimburse any expense for assembling nomination or presentation materials.
  • PMI/PMIEF reserves the right within its sole discretion, and at any time up to presentation of the award, to determine whether a nomination is or has become ineligible.
    • If this happens, PMI will notify the lead nominator and the author(s) of its decision as soon as possible.
    • Declined nominations cannot be revised or resubmitted.
  • In the case of a co-authored book, each author will be recognized.
  • Only one Donald S. Barrie Award will be given annually.
  • The recipient of the Donald S. Barrie Award will receive US$500 in total for the paper submitted.
  • PMI reserves the right not to present the award for a particular year in which the evaluations completed indicate that nominations and supporting materials did not sufficiently demonstrate the stated criteria.

The PMI Donald S. Barrie Award follows a multi-stage evaluation process.

All submissions are rigorously reviewed by qualified volunteers and subject matter experts, leading to the selection of finalists and one overall winner.

Step 1 — Application

To begin the application process, the paper must be nominated by one or more individuals. If multiple people support the nomination, at least one of the nominators must be a PMI member or a publisher and one must be designated as the lead nominator. The lead nominator is responsible for assembling and submitting the complete nomination package through the PMI Awards Platform, including all required elements listed below.

  • Basic information, contact details, etc. for the applicant
  • Explanation of the contribution that this paper makes to advance knowledge and practice in the field of design, procurement, and/or construction by providing a useful contribution to the engineering and construction industry (500-word max)
  • Highlight the relevant subcategory (see criteria 4)
  • The applicant’s resume or CV (in .pdf or .doc format) with a complete list of publications that specifically contribute to practice
  • Electronic copy of the nominated journal paper (pdf or .doc)

Step 2 — Review Process

Verify the nomination’s eligibility and that all required materials have been submitted. Distribute and collect required paperwork, including PMI release and permissions forms.

Step 3 — Global Evaluation

A review team of global volunteers evaluates the nominations. Nominees are scored based on the rubric for each criterion.

Step 4 — Award Winner

The recipient of the PMI Donald S. Barrie Award will be selected and notified following completion of the previous step. The award will be formally announced during the PMI Global Summit. After the award presentation, the recipient will be publicized through PMI communication channels and external media and may coordinate additional publicity with PMI.
