About the James R. Snyder International Student Paper Award

The James R. Snyder International Student Paper Award was established by the PMI Educational Foundation (PMIEF).

It honors James R. Snyder, a PMI pioneer who received the first PMI Fellow Award in 1982, and the award recognizes outstanding student research in project management, continuing his legacy of academic excellence and leadership.

Eligibility

Nominated authors do not need to be PMI members. However, the nominated research paper must be: 

  • Written within the last two calendar years while the nominee was a student in good standing at an institute of higher learning
  • An original academic research paper focused on maximizing project success and advancing the project management profession
  • Written by a single author or co-authored with an active faculty advisor (supervisor) at the time of its completion
Ineligible Submissions
  • Current PMI team members
  • Current members of PMI’s Academic Advisory Team (AAT)
  • Anyone who has received this award within the last 10 years
  • Individuals who have failed to comply with PMI policies and procedures, including PMI's Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct

Participation & Conflict of Interest

  • Current members of PMI/PMIEF’s Board of Directors may neither be nominated, nor participate in nomination or evaluation.  
Criteria, Rules & Guidelines

Criteria

The James R. Snyder Student Paper of the Year Award requires candidates to demonstrate the following criteria: 

  • Originality of presented concept(s)
  • Enriched knowledge by distilling insights from practical experiences. With emphasis placed on practical applicability of the research and how the concept will maximize project success
  • Subjected to peer review in an area that has the potential to contribute to project management practice, including journal articles, conference papers, keynote presentations, and invited contributions
  • Published within the previous two years
  • Presents a pragmatic approach and solutions to current and future project management issues that will maximize project success

Awards Rules & Conditions

  • Only one James R. Snyder Student Paper of the Year Award will be given annually.
  • Nominations that are submitted incomplete, incorrectly formatted, late, or in a language other than English will not be considered.
  • PMI will not reimburse any expense for assembling nomination or presentation materials.
  • PMI reserves the right within its sole discretion, and at any time up to presentation of the award, to determine whether a nomination is or has become ineligible.
    • If this happens, PMI will notify the lead nominator and the author of its decision as soon as possible.
    • Declined nominations cannot be revised or resubmitted.
  • PMI reserves the right not to present the award for a particular year in which the evaluations completed indicate that nominations and supporting materials did not sufficiently demonstrate the stated criteria.
  • The recipient of the James R. Snyder Student Paper Award will receive US$500 in total for the paper submitted.

The James R. Snyder Student Paper of the Year Award follows a multi-stage evaluation process.

All submissions are rigorously reviewed by a panel of experts in project management, leading to the selection of finalists and one overall winner.

Step 1 — Application

To begin the application process, the nominee must be nominated by one or more individuals. If multiple people support the nomination, one must be designated as the lead nominator. The lead nominator is responsible for assembling and submitting the complete nomination package through the PMI Awards Platform, including all required elements listed below.

  • A resume or Curriculum Vitae for the applicant with a complete list of publications that specifically contribute to practice (.pdf or .doc) (Mandatory)
  • Basic information, contact details, etc. (Mandatory)
  • An explanation of the contribution that this paper makes to advance the project profession and maximize project success (mandatory, 500-word max)
  • Electronic copy of paper (pdf or .doc) (Mandatory)
  • Official transcript or verification of enrollment (.pdf) (Mandatory)
  • Letter of recommendation from an active advisor (.pdf) (Mandatory)

Step 2 — Review Process

Verify the nominee’s eligibility and that all required materials have been submitted. Distribute and collect required paperwork, including PMI release and permissions forms.

Step 3 — Global Evaluation

A review team of global volunteers evaluates the nominations. Nominees are scored based on the rubric for each criterion.

Step 4 — Award Winner

The recipient of the James R. Snyder Student Paper Award will be selected and notified following completion of the previous step. The award will be formally announced during the PMI Global Summit.

After the award presentation, the recipient will be publicized through PMI communication channels and external media and may coordinate additional publicity with PMI.
