About The Kerzner Award

The purpose of The Kerzner Award is to recognize a Project Manager who has exemplified superior performance and outstanding project management methods, skills, and techniques, and their important contributions to solve social issues and/or improving the quality of life, well-being, sustainable development of individuals or communities.

The award, sponsored by International Institute for Learning, Inc., is named in recognition of Dr. Harold Kerzner, Executive Director for Project Management, IIL. He is a globally recognized expert on project, program, portfolio management, and strategic planning and is the author of more than 60 best-selling books about project management.

Eligibility

The nominee must demonstrate a minimum of 5 years of experience in the project management profession.  

  • The nominee is not required to be a PMI member.
  • Self-nomination is permitted.
Ineligible Submissions
  • Individuals who applied for and accepted or served as evaluators for this award within the last two years are not eligible to submit a nomination.
    • Any nomination submitted by an active or recent evaluator will be automatically declined, as this creates a conflict of interest.
    • To maintain the integrity of the evaluation process, attempts to bypass this requirement will be addressed in accordance with PMI’s professional conduct standards. 
  • Individuals who have failed to comply with PMI policies and procedures, including PMI's Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct 

Participation & Conflict of Interest

  • Current PMI team members, PMI contractors, and/or PMI consultants are not eligible to apply or nominate for this award. 

Criteria, Rules & Guidelines

Criteria

The Kerzner Award for Excellence in Social Impact requires candidates to demonstrate the following four criteria.

All cited contributions should clearly provide evidence of the impact, outcomes, and results of the nominee’s efforts:

Project Management Excellence (Methods, Skills, and Techniques)
Assesses the quality, rigor, and mastery of project management practices demonstrated in the project.

Social Impact of the Project
Evaluates the extent to which the project contributed to solving social issues and/or improving the quality of life, well-being, sustainable development of individuals or communities.

Project Success
The extent to which the project delivered meaningful outcomes and sustained value that justified the effort and investment, beyond traditional measures of scope, schedule, and cost.

Clarity and Effectiveness of Presentation
Assesses how clearly and persuasively the applicant articulated their ability to deliver the project.

Strength and Persuasiveness of Recommendations
Assesses the clarity, credibility, and effectiveness of the recommendations in articulating why the applicant is deserving of this award

Awards Rules & Conditions

  • Only one Kerzner Award for Excellence in Social Impact will be given annually. 
  • PMI reserves the right not to present the award for a particular year in which the evaluations completed indicate that nominations and supporting materials did not sufficiently demonstrate the stated criteria.  
  • Individuals located in the PMI China region may use a PMI ID in place of PMI membership when submitting a nomination, whether for themselves or someone else. 
  • After submission, nominations are reviewed for eligibility. If a nomination or nominee is deemed ineligible, the nomination will be declined. Declined nominations cannot be revised or resubmitted during the same award season. 
  • Active campaigning for nominations by both nominator and nominee is prohibited to ensure fairness and impartiality in the nomination process. Examples of activities that are considered active campaigning include:
    • Soliciting nominations directly from eligible nominators.
    • Promoting oneself through social media or other platforms specifically for Kerzner Award for Excellence in Social Impact candidacy. 
    • Engaging in a “quid pro quo” arrangement for nominations (“I will nominate you, if you nominate me.”)
  • Nominations that are submitted incomplete, incorrectly formatted, late, or in a language other than English will not be considered. 
  • Winner receives: 
    • Recognition in PMIEF marketing activities, including press releases, website, events, posters, social media. 
    • All expenses paid trip to the PMI Global Summit.
    • Opportunity to present their PowerPoint presentation at IIL’s International Project Management Day™ Online Conference to many thousands of participants around the world

The Kerzner Award for Excellence in Social Impact follows a multi-stage evaluation process.

All submissions are rigorously reviewed by qualified volunteers and subject matter experts, leading to the selection of finalists and the selection of a winner.

Step 1 — Application

Applicants must submit a nomination package through the PMI Awards Platform, consisting of the elements listed below.  

  • Two letters of recommendation must also be provided by non-relatives who can attest to the applicant’s skills, qualifications, and project management proficiency. (Mandatory) 
  • A PowerPoint Presentation which contains lessons learned from a project for which the nominee was Project Manager and show how that lesson was turned into a best practice for either the PMO, organization as a whole and how it created meaningful social impact. (Mandatory) 

Step 2 — Initial Evaluation

A team of subject matter experts reviews all submissions and identifies a list of shortlisted candidates, based on the stated criteria.

Step 3 — Global Evaluation

A review team of global volunteers evaluates the nominations. Nominees are scored based on the rubric for each criterion.

Step 4 — Award Winner

The recipient of the PMI Research Achievement Award will be selected and notified following completion of the previous step. The award will be formally announced during the PMI Global Summit.

After the award presentation, the recipient will be publicized through PMI communication channels and external media and may coordinate additional publicity with PMI.
