There are numerous project management software packages that are used to implement efficient planning and control systems. This article presents a systematic framework that will enable project managers to evaluate and compare their software with other available packages on the market, specifically focusing on resource-allocation performance. Sample problems with known optimal solutions were used as a baseline for comparing and ranking the various software packages. Two techniques were used to analyze the test results: error analysis ranking, and paired-regression analysis. The specific test results presented here are not as important as the general comparative analysis methodology, since the resource-allocation capabilities of project management software continue to evolve and improve.
