In most large companies, management has long recognized a deficiency in project management and quality assurance (QA) concerning information systems development and maintenance projects. This paper provides a practical, prototypical artificial intelligence based approach to solving these ill-structured problems. The authors show how a hybrid intelligence system with expert system and artificial neural network components can be used to aid in project estimate validation and quality prediction of the deliverables. The output from such a hybrid system then can be used in a traditional project management timeline tool for collecting the estimate information, tracking the project through its completion. The authors also provide guidelines for large-scale development of such systems.
