Learning project management outside the classroom

the internship

Project management has been a staple part of both undergraduate and graduate business classes. However, project management is just a small part of an entire survey course, and may leave a project manager without the education needed to succeed. To try to fill in the educational gap between the classroom and workplace, the concept of an internship experience was developed and implemented. The internship provides an excellent learning tool for a student to experience hands-on project management, something a textbook cannot provide. An internship was created for a project engineer for a municipal city government.A faculty advisor and the sponsoring institution oversaw the internship, and guided the intern through the processes of landscaping a median strip along 2900 feet of city streets. As in all projects, there were some difficulties, but the intern gained valuable experience that will directly help him in managing future projects.
