Faced with stiff competition in the global marketplace, automotive manufacturers have been searching for ways to increase efficiency, reduce costs, increase turnaround time, and develop a higher quality car. The Program Management Support System (PMSS) may be the key to the future success of the auto industry. A PMSS is the juxtaposition of technology with project management processes and disciplines to facilitate: planning and scheduling, resource and cost management, configuration and change management, and risk control. The PMSS is meant to be a team effort integrating representatives from all disciplines. The PMSS team focuses on planning, scheduling, and controlling the program with input from all the representative disciplines. A PMSS provides: an integrated vehicle plan, early warning system for potential problems, updated picture of the entire vehicle, alterative analysis, efficient utilization of resources, improved communication, and objective and independent assessment.
