Project Management Institute (PMI) is a nonprofit professional organization dedicated to advancing the state-of-the-art in project management. PMI's objectives are to:

  • □ Foster professionalism in the management of projects.
  • □ Advance the quality and range of project management.
  • □ Identify and promote the fundamentals of project management and advance the body of knowledge for managing projects successfully.
  • □ Provide a recognized forum for free exchange of ideas, applications and solutions to project management challenges.
  • □ Stimulate the application of project management to the benefit of industry and the public.
  • □ Provide an interface between users and suppliers of hardware and software project management systems.
  • □ Collaborate with universities and other educational institutions to encourage appropriate education and career development at all levels in project management.
  • □ Encourage academic and industrial research in the field of project management.
  • □ Foster contacts internationally with other public and private organizations, which relate to project management, and cooperate in matters of common interest.

What Does PMI Do?

Project Management Journal (PMJ)

The PMJ is the Institute's official magazine. It is published five times a year for PMI members and contains a variety of technical articles covering the broad spectrum of project management…from derailed descriptions of specific management techniques and systems to broad ranging discussions of alternative management structures and personnel motivation PMJ also contains news about the organization's members and about chapter activities.

Chapters

PMI actively encourages the formation of Strong local chapters to provide a continuing opportunity for meetings and discussion throughout the year There are active chapters in many parts of the United States. Canada and other countries.

Project Activities

PMI supports project management related professional activities, which will benefit PMI membership, through the approval and funding of projects to be carried out by interested chapters and members. PMI's Board of Directors encourages both chapters and individual members to submit project proposals for consideration.

Annual Seminar/Symposium

A Seminar/Symposium of several days duration is held annually The program includes outstanding guest speakers, panels, technical papers, ad-hoc discussion sessions, workshops and tours of project sites Papers presented cover virtually all aspects of project management and are published in the Proceedings given to all registrants The Proceedings represent some of the most advanced thought in project management and are a valuable reference source throughout the year PMI encourages maximum participation at the Seminar/Symposium.

Social programs also foster interaction and PMI's Seminar/Symposium has a full program for spouses and guests Social activities take place outside normal business hours and cause no interference with the program.

The Seminar/Symposium site changes each year so that more of the Institute's members may attend.

The Seminar/Symposium offers an excellent opportunity for attendees to meet their peers on both business and social levels, and to stay abreast of the most advanced thinking in the field of project management.

Project Management Workshops

PMI sponsors workshops on the fundamentals of project management and on advanced topics. The workshops are usually conducted immediately before or after the Seminar/Symposium They are led by both businessmen and university professors.

Who Are PMI's Members?

PMI membership includes a broad cross section of individuals from industrial and manufacturing companies, engineering-design and architectural firms, construction companies, utilities, educational institutions, pharmaceutical companies, aerospace companies, consulting firms and all levels of government The membership is widely dispersed throughout North. Central and South America, Asia and Europe The largest concentration of members is in the United States and Canada.

Who is Eligible for Membership?

Membership in PMI is open to any person interested in furthering the purposes for which PMI was founded and who is actively engaged in the application, teaching or research of project management principles and techniques Members have full voting rights and privileges.

PMI also has a special Student Member classification which is open to individuals registered in an accredited educational institution on a full-time basis Student members may not vote or hold office in PMI. PMI does not have a corporate member classification.

What Are the Benefits of Membership?

Some of the benefits of membership to those engaged in project management are:

  • PMI's program covers the whole spectrum of project management.
  • A subscription to “Project Management Journal.”
  • Certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP).
  • Reduced fees for the annual Seminar / Symposium, publications and other PMI programs.
  • Potential membership in a local chapter and participation in discussions and meetings on a regular basis.

How is PMI Managed?

The management of PMI is the responsibility of the Board of Directors which is elected by the membership at large. The Board consists of the Chairman, President, Vice President-Public Relations, Vice President-Administration. Vice President-Technical Activities and three Vice Presidents-Region. The Chairman is the immediate past president of PMI and the term of office is one year. The term of all other elected Directors is two years. The day-to-day operation of the Institute is under the direction of an appointed Executive Director. Other appointed officers are the Director of Educational Services. Director of Certification and the Editor-in-Chief of the PMJ.
