As an increasing number of companies look towards project management as a method for effectively competing in the global marketplace, the discipline is gaining ground as an important organizational asset that can help companies both generate competitive advantages and improve their capability to realize their strategic goals. This paper examines project management's strategic function. In doing so, it explains the resource-based view (RBV)--which the author uses to structure an exploratory study of four international companies--in relation to the strategy literature. It also describes the research methodology and outlines the study's two research questions: What characterizes project management when it is considered a strategic asset? How do firms develop and sustain a competitive advantage in project management? It then analyzes the study's results and explains how the four companies practice project management as a strategic asset. It details 14 organizational elements that address the second research quest
