Newly established project offices sometimes are caught between senior management's expectation that they will bring quick results to the organization and the project office's own desire to proceed according to a long-term vision. This article offers several 'secrets' for reconciling these two goals: 1) Rein in runaway projects; 2) Enable project startups, and establish an estimating and risk process; 3) Review and manage the project portfolio; 4) Review and audit projects; and 5) organize and manage the resource pool. Several exhibits are featured, including a list of early warning signs of runaway projects, and a progressive project manager development program that is managed by the organization's project office.
