If all goes to plan, the Sky Mile Tower in Tokyo, Japan will soar approximately 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) into the sky—more than double the height of the world's current tallest skyscraper. A building of such staggering height requires creative structural features: Vertical slots would allow wind to pass through, and hexagonal islands will break up large waves. Funding is complete for the US$1.2 billion project. If approved, it will be completed in 2045.
