Shanghai Disney Resort was a long time coming. The first Walt Disney theme park in mainland China, the project required about two decades of negotiations between the U.S. company and the Shanghai government, followed by five years of construction. The US$5.5 billion resort, a joint venture between state-owned Shanghai Shendi Group and Disney, spans more than 7 square kilometers (2.7 square miles) and opened in June.
