Project Managers Without Borders Joins Project Management Institute to Expand and Strengthen Project Management’s Positive Impact on the World
More than 700,000 PMI Members will have more opportunities to volunteer their time and project management skills to help nonprofits and NGOs maximize project success.
16 October 2024
Underscoring its commitment to the project management profession to maximize project success and impact positive change, Project Management Institute (PMI), the world's leading authority for project professionals, is unifying operations with Project Managers Without Borders (PMWB). This brings together the two organizations’ individual aspirations to drive social impact through project success and brings this mission closer to the core purpose of PMI.
The PMI community is already passionate about volunteering, and now coming together with PMWB will provide project managers with even more opportunities to fulfill their personal goals of contributing to societal good. The PMI Hours for Impact initiative encourages project managers around the world to share how they applied their project management expertise to projects supporting the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2023 alone, project managers pledged 721,896 hours to more than 850 projects in 123 countries.
“We’re dedicated to showing the power project management can have on the world and providing career growth opportunities to project managers so they can contribute to that positive change,” said Pierre Le Manh, President & Chief Executive Officer of PMI. “Project Managers Without Borders becoming part of PMI is a big step towards fulfilling this purpose. It gives our global community of talented project managers the opportunity to lend their skills – and a helping hand – to the nonprofits and NGOs helping people around the world.”
Important details of this move include:
- More Volunteers to Make Impact: Volunteers are the heartbeat of both the PMI and PMWB communities. To strengthen collaboration, PMWB volunteers will now seamlessly transition to becoming PMI volunteers, and all will have access to exciting volunteering opportunities in the coming months. This access to the broader community of volunteers of PMI and diverse skill sets will enhance capabilities to serve PMWB’s current and prospective nonprofit and NGO partners with even greater project expertise.
- Bigger Global Footprint: Leaders are developing a PMI Chapter pilot to combine the best practices of PMWB with the successful community engagement strategies PMI Chapters employ around the world. This pilot program is currently underway and will continue to unfold over the next six months. The outputs of the pilot will help apply the global community’s collective project management skills to directly address global challenges.
- Combined Talent and Expertise: PMWB founder, Deanna Landers, will continue to provide guidance and leadership now as the Chairman of the Board of PMWB at PMI. Landers will actively collaborate with the PMI operational team, led by Executive Director, Ashley Forsyth. This combination of PMWB and PMI knowledge will contribute to a smooth transition.
“Joining PMI provides unprecedented opportunities to scale PMWB’s impact,” said Landers. “We’re expanding the reach of our initiatives while making it clear that PMI, now including the PMWB community, is the leading organization dedicated to making the world a better place through project management.”
