Advanced Project Leader (APL)™

Complex work demands a higher level of leadership

Competing stakeholders, shifting risk, artificial intelligence and high business consequences now define the initiatives that matter most. Knowing who can lead through that is a delivery question before it is a talent question.

Our Pulse of the Profession® 2026 report found complexity rising for almost everyone.

  • 81% of Project Professionals report increasing complexity
  • 97% of those Project Professionals managed at least one complex project in the past year

  • Projects are 5x more likely to succeed

when complexity is managed effectively: 88% versus 14%

What is APL Accreditation?

A consistent standard for advanced capability

PMI accredits the process, not the people

APL Accreditation aligns your organization’s advanced-practitioner evaluation program with PMI standards, creating a credible pathway to identify eligible employees for APL certification.

  1. PMI reviews your organization’s program

PMI assesses your organization’s internal evaluation program for advanced Project Professionals against criteria for fairness, rigor, consistency and alignment with global standards.

  2. The focus is the process

Accreditation applies to how your organization evaluates advanced project talent.

  3. Accreditation unlocks eligibility

Once your organization’s program is accredited, eligible employees can be identified to sit for the APL exam at a reduced rate.
