As US Federal Agencies Scale AI, PMI® Certification Awarded Accessible Through Tradewinds

Project Management Institute (PMI) today announced that its PMI Certified Professional in Managing AI (PMI-CPMAI)™ has achieved “Awardable” status through the Tradewinds Solutions Marketplace, giving federal agencies faster access to AI project leadership training and certification.
Tradewinds Solutions Marketplace, managed by the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO), is a U.S. Department of War platform designed to accelerate the procurement and adoption of artificial intelligence, machine learning, data, training, and analytics capabilities. Solutions designated as Awardable have already been evaluated through competitive procedures, helping streamline agency access.
The announcement comes as federal agencies accelerate AI adoption while facing growing pressure to modernize systems, strengthen workforce readiness, and implement the technology responsibly. According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), federal AI use cases nearly doubled from 571 in 2023 to 1,110 in 2024, while generative AI use cases increased ninefold over the same period. GAO has also highlighted ongoing challenges related to AI procurement, vendor evaluation, technical expertise, and oversight. Separately, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management has identified program and project management as critical capability gaps in agencies’ ability to scale AI successfully.
“Federal agencies are under growing pressure to adopt AI, but many are doing so while navigating workforce capability gaps, procurement complexity, and increased expectations around oversight,” said Jason Briefel, Manager of U.S. Government Affairs at PMI. “Achieving Awardable status through Tradewinds gives agencies a faster, easier way to access vetted PMI-CPMAI training and certification that can help build the project leadership skills needed to adopt AI effectively.”
The PMI-CPMAI™ Exam Prep Course and Certification are designed to help professionals lead complex AI initiatives from planning through delivery. The training and certification focus on skills such as governance, implementation strategy, stakeholder engagement, risk management, and responsible AI practices, helping federal agencies move AI efforts from experimentation to execution with greater structure and accountability.
“AI projects introduce new layers of complexity around governance, ethics, stakeholder trust, operational integration, and long-term value realization,” said Kathleen Walch, Director of AI Engagement and Community at PMI. “In complex government environments, those challenges can make it difficult to move from pilots to real outcomes. Recent PMI research found that 31% of complex projects fail to achieve their intended benefits, underscoring the need for strong project leadership, governance, and execution.”
