She is the author of the forthcoming book The Leadership Economy: Why Today’s Organizations Need the Leaders We Are Not Yet Developing.
Why did I develop Role Agnostic Project Leadership (RAPL)?
My professional journey is closely connected to why I developed RAPL.
After completing my MSc in Human Resource Management, I began my career in HR operations. That experience taught me that leadership development does not happen by accident. It is a system. Organizations define the purpose and accountability of each role, identify the skills, capabilities, experience, and behaviors it requires, match the right person to the role and culture, address development needs through training and experience, assess performance, and use that evidence for promotion and succession planning. The cycle should continually evolve as the work changes.
I later moved into HR technology, transformation, and project work. To understand this environment deeply, I completed nine PMI credentials: PMP, PgMP, PfMP, PMI-ACP, PMI-RMP, PMI-PBA, PMI-PMOCP, PMI-CPMAI, and PMI-CSPP, together with Prosci change management certification. These disciplines exposed me to the capabilities required to diagnose needs, translate strategy, govern portfolios, integrate programs, sponsor delivery, lead risk and change, manage AI initiatives, and sustain value.
That combination of HR and project experience allowed me to see the gap. The Project Economy and the AI Economy have changed the work leaders are expected to govern. In some organizations, more strategic value now moves through projects, programs, transformations, and AI initiatives than through traditional operations. Yet leadership systems still largely develop and assess leaders for operational stability, functional performance, and recurring work.
Operational leaders were increasingly expected to exercise project leadership capabilities that many had never been systematically exposed to, developed in, or assessed against.
That is the Leadership Capability Gap I identified, and it is why I developed Role Agnostic Project Leadership. RAPL defines the capabilities leaders need to govern projectized work successfully, regardless of whether their formal role sits in projects or operations. The capabilities belong wherever responsibility for strategy, investment, transformation, adoption, and sustained value sits.
