How PMI South Florida Chapter’s Study Group Supports PMP Candidates
Passing the PMP exam takes focus, practice and a plan. At PMI South Florida Chapter’s Finish Line Study Group, members prepare together, encourage each other, and celebrate wins with a whole chapter behind them.

One evening in South Florida, a message lands in a study group's chat: “All, we have another new PMP … Please help me to congratulate him.” The replies come fast. “WOOT WOOT!!” A celebration sticker. A string of congratulations from mentors and study partners. Within minutes, the group's newest Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification holder, the 21st from his cohort, is surrounded by applause from the people who prepared right beside him.
That exchange comes from the Finish Line Study Group, a program from the PMI South Florida Chapter for members who've completed their 35 PMP training hours and are preparing to take the PMP exam. The chapter has run the program across multiple cohorts, and the celebration thread shows exactly what it was built to do.
Most people picture certification prep as a solo effort: one desk, one screen, one long checklist. Finish Line offers a different model. It treats exam preparation as a team effort. And many local PMI chapters can provide that kind of support to you too: a community that studies with you, holds you accountable and cheers you on the whole way.
A clear PMP path from first session to exam day
The chapter’s Finish Line Study Group gives candidates a clear path forward. Cohorts run for 15 weeks, meeting for an hour every Wednesday evening online. Everyone works toward the same milestones: submit the PMP application, schedule the exam and take it by the cohort's target date. Study resources are set from day one, anchored by PMI Study Hall® Plus, so members can focus on preparing rather than deciding which resources to use.
And the finish line is real. New certification holders are celebrated on social media and on stage at the PMI South Florida Annual Conference, in front of the community that helped them get there.
Accountability that feels like encouragement
Between sessions, the cohort stays connected through a group chat run by mentors and volunteers. Deadlines come with friendly reminders, and help is always one message away. When organizers want to check on application progress, they post a poll with an offer built in: “Have you submitted your PMP application? If not, do you need help?” Twelve members confirmed they've submitted. The few still working on it received support in the same thread, no chasing required.
The chat is also where every win gets its moment. Each pass is announced to the whole community, mentors lead the cheering and the congratulations pile up fast. One member’s celebration becomes motivation for the next person to schedule their exam date.
A PMI community for the good days and the tough ones
Every certification journey has its difficult moments, and that's where this community shows its depth. When one member shared that their exam attempt hadn’t gone their way, encouragement filled the chat within hours: mentors who had once been in the same position, a study partner offering to prepare alongside them, and one line that captured the spirit of the group: “Your PMP family is in your corner.” By the next morning, the member and a fellow candidate had both committed to the next cohort, ready to try again with the same team behind them.
That's the advantage of preparing with a chapter. Progress never rests on a single day. There is always a next session, a next cohort and a group of people who believe you'll get there.
What candidates build along the way
Ryan Mahoney, PMP, vice president of education at PMI South Florida Chapter, knows the program from both sides. He has helped guide it as a chapter leader, and recently earned his own PMP through it, with Above Target performance in all three exam domains. Ask him what the candidates gain from the experience, and he’ll tell you that exam readiness is on the beginning.
Candidates weren't simply preparing for an exam. They were developing the PMI mindset while building the confidence, decision-making skills, and professional judgment needed to become successful project managers.
That's the deeper value of PMI chapter membership: the certification is the milestone, and the community helps you grow into the professional it represents.
Find support through your local PMI Chapter
Many PMI chapters have study groups, exam prep communities, and mentoring programs. Each community looks different, so explore what your local chapter offers and find the support that fits your journey.
If earning your PMP has been on your list for a while, here's the change to make: don't prepare alone. Your local chapter can connect you with people who understand the process, encourage your progress and support you through whatever comes next.
