In the four years since PMI introduced its Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification program, the program has quickly expanded and evolved to meet the needs of project managers. This article details the current PMP® certification program. In doing so, it details the history of its founding and implementation and outlines its purpose, philosophy, and application and examination process. It also discusses the program in relation to the PMI Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)® Guide, a framework approved by PMI's board of directors in March 1987. It then describes the impact of using the PMBOK® Guide in relation to practicing project management. It also explains the PMP® recertification process.
