PMO speeds success for transportation facility

Project management principles kept a construction project for the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on track despite a rigid budget and brutal schedule

Delivering a fast-track project on-time, on-budget, and to-specification is a challenging--and often daunting--task for even the most experienced and accomplished project management professional. Such a task was magnified when the United States Transportation Security Coordination Center (TSCC) demanded its project manager deliver--in only three months and for less than (US)$20 million--a major command, control, and communications facility for monitoring national transportation security. This article examines this effort, a project that resulted in a 100,00 square foot structure delivered four percent under budget and in 97 days. It discusses this project's success in relation to the project team's use of project management practices and its operating through a project management office (PMO).
