The PMI® GPM® P5™ Standard for Sustainability in Project Management

The global standard for sustainability in projects.

Recognized as the world’s most comprehensive standard for sustainability in projects, the GPM® P5™ has been updated with new guidance. Version 4.0 is a collaborative effort of Green Project Management and PMI, aligning with the PMBOK® Guide and global guidelines to assess, manage and elevate sustainability.

Overview

The GPM® P5™ Standard for Sustainability in Project Management - Version 4.0 establishes a formal governance and lifecycle model aligned with the PMBOK® Guide - Eighth Edition. It integrates performance domains, risk, and value delivery systems while strengthening connections to global sustainability guidelines.

This edition reinforces structured progression from reducing harm to delivering measurable, net-positive outcomes. It embeds sustainability into decision-making through impact thresholds, scoring models, and escalation mechanisms.

With expanded guidance across environmental, social and economic domains, along with new AI governance and value chain considerations, the P5 Standard enables practitioners and organizations to manage sustainability as a core component of project governance.
