Agentic AI Is Revealing the Organizational Readiness Gap

By Virginia Thompson

As agentic AI reshapes business models and ways of working, the question facing leaders is no longer whether to adopt AI. It's whether their organizations are prepared to adapt. New research suggests the greatest challenge may not be the technology itself, but the leadership, workforce, and organizational capabilities required to turn AI-driven change into lasting business value.

The conversation around AI is changing. For the last few years, most organizations have focused on adoption. Which tools should we use? Where can AI create efficiencies? How quickly can we deploy it?

Now a different question is emerging: Are we actually ready for the way AI will change how work gets done?

New research from Deloitte highlights a growing readiness gap. Nearly two-thirds of executives surveyed say they are reevaluating their business models because of agentic AI, while 75% believe human-AI collaboration creates more value than automation alone. Yet half acknowledge their organizations are not investing enough in workforce transformation.*

The message is clear: AI's greatest challenge may no longer be the technology itself. Instead, it's organizational readiness.

The real transformation is not technical

Many organizations are still approaching AI as a technology initiative. They introduce new tools, automate individual tasks and look for quick productivity gains.

But agentic AI changes the equation.

According to Deloitte's research, executives increasingly recognize that realizing the full value of AI requires rethinking processes, workflows and operating models, as well as how humans and AI work together. Only 5% of organizations report being highly prepared for AI agents, while just 15% have achieved scaled, cross-functional adoption.*

That gap between ambition and readiness should concern business leaders.

Technology can be deployed quickly, but organizational transformation cannot.

Why enterprise agility matters more than ever

As AI reshapes business models and operating practices, organizations need the ability to adapt continuously rather than respond periodically.

This is where enterprise agility becomes critical.

Agile organizations can redirect resources faster, make decisions closer to the work and adjust operating models as conditions change. More importantly, they can turn strategy into execution while maintaining alignment across teams.

The challenge, more than predicting exactly how AI will evolve over the next few years, is building an organization capable of adapting as it does.

The workforce question cannot be ignored

One finding from the Deloitte research stands out. While leaders expect significant workforce disruption from agentic AI, many believe they are underinvesting in workforce transformation.*

This reflects a common pattern in transformation efforts. Organizations often invest heavily in technology while underinvesting in the people, skills, leadership capabilities and change management practices needed to make transformation successful.

Yet, AI adoption is ultimately a human challenge.

Success depends on leaders who can guide change, teams that can work effectively with AI, and governance models that ensure accountability remains clear as intelligent systems take on greater responsibility.

Moving From Adoption to Readiness

The organizations that realize the greatest value from AI are unlikely to be those with the most tools. They will be the ones that can execute change consistently.

That means developing the capabilities to redesign work, lead transformation, build AI-ready talent and create governance structures that support innovation without sacrificing accountability.

In other words, the future belongs to organizations that adopt AI and are also well prepared to evolve with it.

As agentic AI continues to advance, the leadership question is no longer "How do we implement AI?"

It's "How ready are we to transform?"
