The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s Enterprise Project Management Office Named PMO of the Year

Project Management Institute (PMI), the world’s leading association for the project, program and portfolio management profession, announced today that The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s (CAMH) Enterprise Project Management Office (EPMO) has been awarded the 2017 PMO of the Year Award.

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is Canada’s largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital, as well as one of the world’s leading research centers in its field. Located in Toronto, Ontario, the hospital system has nine offices across the province and treats more than 30,000 patients each year. It measures success in terms of clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction and safety. As one of the world’s leading mental health research centers and the largest hospital of its kind in Canada, the publicly funded organization must operate as efficiently as possible.

Over the past five years, the hospital’s EPMO has played a pivotal role in helping CAMH achieve its strategic goals. Projects accountable to the EPMO have been significantly more on track than other initiatives. While the EPMO was initially focused on helping the organization’s IT projects, it became evident that the function could expand to serve other projects in the organization. A year after the CAMH’s EPMO was launched in 2012, leaders expanded its purview to cover projects in every portfolio from clinical practices to research operations.

The organization’s EPMO now supports all of the portfolios across the CAMH, ensuring alignment with the strategic vision of the organization. Team members within the project management office (PMO) are supported by a strong EPMO career path that develops business analysts and project managers into leaders. The EPMO’s biggest accomplishment includes supporting the implementation of a major clinical information system and the achievement of HIMSS Stage 7 that gives staff across the organization access to up-to-date patient records and improves the quality and safety of patient care. Ninety percent of suicide risk assessments are now completed within 24 hours (up from 75 percent), which has dramatically increased the percentage of at-risk patients identified, leading to care planning being adjusted to address patient risk.

The PMO of the Year Award honors a PMO that has demonstrated superior organizational project management abilities by adding value to its organization through its support of successful strategic initiatives. The award recognizes a PMO that has established a vision for value delivery and has had a positive and clear impact on business results.

This year’s award was presented in Houston, Texas, as part of PMI’s sixth annual PMO Symposium.
