Plan Your Development To the PMI Talent Triangle®

Achieving your professional goals and aspirations takes hard work and commitment. Typically, there's no single skill or trait that will propel you up the career ladder. It's a combination of skills.

That's what the PMI Talent Triangle® highlights — the combination of skills that employers value most, namely, technical, leadership, and strategic and business management. This framework is a valuable asset to your ongoing professional development.

The Triangle Defined

Leadership

Knowledge, skills and behaviors involved in the ability to guide, motivate and/or direct others to achieve a goal.

Strategic & Business Management

Knowledge of and expertise in the industry/organization, helping you align your team in a way that enhances performance and better delivers business outcomes.

Classifying your PDUs

So, how do you use the Talent Triangle to support your development efforts?

If you've already engaged in some professional development activities and are now trying to classify the PDUs according to the Talent Triangle, follow these steps:

  • Determine the duration of the activity to arrive at the PDU total, and then ask:
    • Was any leadership content covered? If so, in how much time?
    • Was any strategic and business management content covered? If so, in how much time?
    • How much of the remaining time covered technical content?

Remember — just use your best judgment!
