What Is Disciplined Agile?

True business agility comes from freedom, not frameworks. We help you learn about your options and guide you to your best next step.

The best way of working for your team is specific to your team. Yet, you stick to a widely used framework like Scrum, or SAFe, or one of the growing number of Agile approaches out there. Sure, a framework can help, but the smartest path forward often borrows thinking from several.

Framework prison is keeping so many Agile organizations from the growth they expect. Because business agility comes from freedom, not frameworks. And when you pair freedom to choose from the best of Agile with guidance to make better choices, you get Disciplined Agile — a toolkit that harnesses hundreds of Agile practices to guide you to the best way of working for your team or organization.

"We partner better, operate with agility and exceed the industry demand to gain competitive advantages."

- Franklin Templeton Investments, using Disciplined Agile since 2015

The DA toolkit is architected into four views:

Mindset. It builds on the foundations of agile and lean to address enterprise realities. This mindset is created and informed by seven core agile principles that guide organizations to be more adaptable and effective. The seven agile principles behind disciplined agile are Delight Customers, Be Awesome, Pragmatism, Context Counts, Choice is Good, Optimize Flow and Enterprise Awareness. Learn more about this Mindset behind the Seven Agile Principles.

People. The Disciplined Agile Toolkit gives any person one or more roles to help create a truly adaptable team. In the agile toolkit, there isn't a perfect match between traditional roles and Disciplined Agile roles - you are free to choose your own way of working (WoW). The strategy continues to change and people must do the same as well. Learn more about the people and different roles from the Disciplined Agile Toolkit.

Flow. The Disciplined Agile Tool provides a streamlines process for your business agility so you can adopt your process in a context-sensitive manner. Each business is unique, applying the agile toolkit allows you to understand how segmented activities can flow together in an effective manner. The Disciplined Agile Toolkit is broken up into four 'process levels':

  • Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD) looks at all aspects of delivery in a streamlined manner from beginning to end. The framework includes but is not limited to an agile lifecycle based on Scrum, Lean and a modern agile Lifecycle. Explore more for Disciplined Agile Delivery.
  • Disciplined DevOps focuses on the streamlining of IT solutions and operations. This process reduces the gap between delivery team and IT operations. When organizations address this gap and challenge, it removes the barriers that inhibit effective collaboration. Learn more about Disciplined DevOps.
  • Disciplined Agile IT (DAIT) addresses how to apply agile and lean strategies to all aspects of IT such as enterprise, data management, portfolio management and other capabilities. DAIT encompasses aspects of Disciplined Agile Delivery and Disciplined DevOps. See if DAIT is perfect for your organization.
  • Disciplined Agile Enterprise allows organizations to respond effectively to changes in the marketplace through an organizational culture that facilitates change. Having a learning mindset in the mainstream business and underlying agile process to drive innovation. Understand more about Disciplined Agile Enterprise.

Practices. Allows you to apply the Disciplined Agile toolkit to different scales of the agile framework. This means applying agile strategies across large teams to geographically distributed software. The Scaled Agile framework in the Disciplined Agile toolkit distinguishes between two types of agile at scale, scaling agile at the team level (tactical agile) or scaling agile at the organizational level (strategic agility). See which scaled agile framework works best for your organization.
