Exposure Drafts

Exposure DraftAll PMI® global standards are established by consensus, taking into account the knowledge, opinions and experiences of the standard project teams, subject matter experts and other project management practitioners. The exposure draft public comment period is a critical component in building consensus.

Exposure drafts are available for 45 days.  You can either download a PDF of a draft or read it directly online, and then input your recommendations.

We encourage all members, volunteers and the greater project management community to take this opportunity to get involved.

The exposure draft period is now closed for the following standards.

A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)
 The Standard for Program Management
 The Standard for Portfolio Management
Organizational Project Management Maturity Model (OPM3®)

A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)—Fourth Edition

When the PMBOK® Guide – Fourth Edition is published at the end of 2008, The Standard for Program Management – Second Edition, The Standard for Portfolio Management – Second Edition, and OPM3® – Second Edition will also be published.  The volunteer teams developing these updates have met to assure concepts and terminology were aligned across all four standards.

The volunteer team for the PMBOK® Guide—Fourth Edition, reviewed the current text to make sure the standard was cohesive in concept, clear in writing style, well defined and congruous with the other publications. Ideally, there should be no content disagreement between standards, and users should see commonalities in content, writing and graphics.

Some of the major enhancements for the Fourth Edition are as follows:

  • • Process names are in a verb-noun format
  • • Data flow diagrams have been developed for each process
  • • A standard approach for discussing Enterprise Environmental Factors and Organizational Process Assets was employed

Available December 2008

The Standard for Program Management—Second Edition

PMI will add nine new knowledge areas to The Standard for Program Management—Second Edition. With the addition of the knowledge areas the second edition will align in structure with the PMBOK® Guide—Fourth Edition.

The new program management knowledge areas are as follows:

  • • Program Integration
  • • Program Scope Management
  • • Program Time Management
  • • Program Financial Management
  • • Stakeholder Management
  • • Program Governance
  • • Program Risk Management
  • • Procurement
  • • Program Communications

In addition to the knowledge areas the second edition will also include 11 new processes.

Available December 2008

The Standard for Portfolio Management—Second Edition

The second editions of The Standard for Program Management and The Standard for Portfolio Management will include knowledge areas. This addition will bring them into alignment with the structure of the PMBOK® Guide.

The Standard for Program Management will include nine new knowledge areas, while The Standard for Portfolio Management will add two.

The new portfolio management knowledge areas will be:

  • • Governance Management
  • • Risk Management

In addition to the knowledge areas, each will add new processes. The portfolio management standard will add six new processes to bring it to a total of 15 in the second edition.

Available December 2008

Organizational Project Management Maturity Model (OPM3®)—Second Edition

OPM3®—Second Edition will benefit greatly from PMI’s decision to publish program and portfolio management standards. These standards were not available when OPM3 was originally published in 2003.

The Best Practices that make up the standard will be updated to align with the PMBOK® Guide—Fourth Edition, The Standard for Program Management—Second Edition, The Standard for Portfolio Management—Second Edition and the Project Manager Competency Development Framework—Second Edition.

In addition, OPM3 will introduce the category of Organizational Enablers to existing Best Practices. Organizational Enabler Best Practices are designed to help assure the organization has established an environment in which project management processes can mature and improve.
